Leather Pouch and Bag Design Course

Learn a practical method for designing pouches and bags

Pouches and bags are useful additions to any leatherworker’s repertoire, but the design process can become unnecessarily complicated when every dimension and construction detail is treated as a separate problem.

During this one-to-one course, you will learn tried-and-tested formulae for establishing height, width, depth, folds and flaps, and turning those decisions into an accurate working template. Once these relationships are understood, designs can be developed far more efficiently while leaving plenty of scope for individual style.

There is not enough time to complete a finished item during the day. You will leave with a working template and the knowledge needed to develop and use it confidently.

Course Content

During the course, you will learn how to use a set of proven formulae to develop a complete working template for a pouch or bag. The method establishes the essential proportions first, providing a reliable foundation that can then be adapted with different shapes, gussets, closures and details.

Alongside design and template making, the day covers the supporting skills needed to turn a pattern into leather: accurate measuring and cutting, stitch marking and stitching, creasing and edge dressing. The emphasis is on understanding how these skills work together so you can repeat and adapt the process independently.

Who is this course for?

This course is suited to leatherworkers who already have a basic understanding of measuring, cutting and stitching and want to begin designing pouches or develop their skills into bag making.

The day can be adapted to your experience. A newer leatherworker may concentrate on developing a simple short-gusset pouch, while a more experienced maker can explore more complex patterns, gussets and construction techniques.

All materials, tools and sundries needed during the day are provided. There are no additional costs or fees.
