Modern Saddle Stitching Course
Develop clean, consistent saddle stitching with modern irons
Modern saddle stitching takes a different approach from the traditional method. Modern irons penetrate the full thickness of the leather, forming each hole before stitching rather than requiring an awl to open it as the stitch is made.
Central to this course is Nigel Armitage’s original pre-pricking technique, developed specifically for modern irons. It provides a controlled method for preparing and using the holes so that the stitch can be balanced and consistent on both the front and back of the work, rather than leaving the reverse to chance.
Modern irons are versatile and can accommodate a range of thread sizes. This approach is well suited to bags, cases, belts, wallets and other leather accessories, although it is not intended to replace traditional stitching for saddlery, bridle or harness work.
Course Content
During the course, you will examine how modern irons work and what to consider when selecting a set suited to your work. You will learn how iron spacing and thread choice affect the appearance and balance of the finished stitch.
Using Nigel’s pre-pricking technique, you will prepare the stitch line before sewing and learn how controlled hole preparation, consistent handling and balanced tension produce a clean saddle stitch on both the front and back.
You will also learn how to plan iron placement on a template so that a stitch line fits correctly between two fixed points without leaving an obvious long or short stitch. Correct back stitching and finishing will also be covered.
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced leatherworkers who want to improve the consistency and appearance of their saddle stitching. No previous stitching experience is required.
Because saddle stitching is used across so many leather goods, the working practices developed during the day can be applied directly to future projects.
What is included?
All materials, tools and sundries needed during the day are provided. There are no additional costs or fees.
Lunch
Lunch is at 12:30 and is not provided, so please bring provisions. Details of local amenities and accommodation are included in the joining pack once the course is booked. Tea and coffee are available throughout the day, including freshly brewed coffee.
All face-to-face courses take place at the Armitage Leather workshop. The course runs from 9 am to 4 pm, with a break for lunch at 12:30. Contact details and directions are available on the Contact page.
Cancellation Policy
If you need to cancel, please let me know as soon as possible.
Cancellations made 14 days or more before the course date are eligible for a full refund.
Cancellations made less than 14 days before the course date are not eligible for a refund, although an alternative date may be offered.
Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the course start time are not eligible for a refund. A further date may be offered at 50% of the normal course price.
All alternative dates are offered at the discretion of Armitage Leather.
If you would like to attend as a couple, trio or group of friends, you can add up to two additional places when booking. The second and third places are each reduced by 50%. Select the number of additional attendees at checkout.
