Leather Tub Making Course
Develop the precision required for round leather boxes
Making a round leather tub demands a higher level of precision than many flat projects. The outer cylinder, inner cylinder and circular caps must be designed and constructed to work together within fine tolerances.
During this one-to-one course, you will learn how to calculate the internal and external measurements correctly, particularly when the tub is intended to hold or fit a specific item. These principles transfer directly to other round boxes and fitted containers.
The day develops your understanding of the design and construction sequence, the specialist techniques involved and the common sources of inaccuracy. You will leave better equipped to continue developing the project independently.
A completed tub cannot be made in one day. A full tub with a fitted lid typically requires three days, so this course concentrates on the skills and method rather than producing a rushed finished object.
Course Content
During the course, you will work through the design and construction sequence for a round leather tub. The skills covered include:
- Design and accurate template making
- Measuring and cutting circles
- Stitch marking and the correct placement of reverse irons
- Undercutting and awl use
- Box stitching for butted seams
- Losing stitches on the round
- Edge dressing and finishing
These techniques are taught as a connected process so that you understand why each stage is required, how one measurement affects the next and how to identify the source of an inaccuracy.
Who is this course for?
This is an advanced course for leatherworkers who can already measure and cut accurately and have a practical command of saddle stitching, skiving and awl use. These skills will be used throughout the day and are not taught from the beginning.
The course is suited to experienced makers who are ready to work to fine tolerances and want to extend their skills into round, fitted construction.
What is included?
All materials, tools and sundries needed during the day are provided. There are no additional costs or fees.
Lunch
Lunch is at 12:30 and is not provided, so please bring provisions. Details of local amenities and accommodation are included in the joining pack once the course is booked. Tea and coffee are available throughout the day, including freshly brewed coffee.
All face-to-face courses take place at the Armitage Leather workshop. The course runs from 9 am to 4 pm, with a break for lunch at 12:30. Contact details and directions are available on the Contact page.
Cancellation Policy
If you need to cancel, please let me know as soon as possible.
Cancellations made 14 days or more before the course date are eligible for a full refund.
Cancellations made less than 14 days before the course date are not eligible for a refund, although an alternative date may be offered.
Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the course start time are not eligible for a refund. A further date may be offered at 50% of the normal course price.
All alternative dates are offered at the discretion of Armitage Leather.
If you would like to attend as a couple, trio or group of friends, you can add up to two additional places when booking. The second and third places are each reduced by 50%. Select the number of additional attendees at checkout.
