Custom Leatherworking Course

Build a leatherworking course around what you need

This one-to-one course is built around a leatherworking subject of your choice. You may want to concentrate on a particular skill or technique, develop a design or product, solve problems within an existing project or explore something not covered by the standard courses.

Previous custom courses have included basque making, whip making, watch straps, wooden box covering, cartridge bags, gun slips, Gladstone bags, mobility devices, aprons and tool rolls. The breadth is the point: not every worthwhile project fits neatly into a predefined course.

Before booking, discuss your objectives with Nigel so that the scope of the course can be planned realistically and any particular materials, hardware or tools can be identified. The course can be booked as a single day or across several days, depending on what you want to achieve.

Course Content

The course content is planned around your chosen subject. Before booking, you and Nigel will agree the starting point, priorities and a realistic outcome for the time available. The day may involve skill assessment, design and template development, technical problem-solving, construction planning or a combination of these.

The aim is not simply to complete a task, but to ensure that you understand why the method works and how to repeat or adapt it independently. If your idea is not yet fully formed, contact Nigel to discuss it and develop a suitable plan.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for leatherworkers at any stage who need focused help with a particular skill, design or project not covered by the standard courses. It may suit a beginner with a specific direction, an experienced maker solving a technical problem or someone developing a new product.

The course can also be adapted for established leatherworkers who want to begin teaching or improve their existing teaching practice. Where appropriate and agreed in advance, suitable students may be arranged to provide a patient, realistic environment in which to develop your instructional skills.

What is included?

Most materials, tools and sundries needed during the day are provided. A specialist or larger project may require particular leather, fittings or hardware that are not included in the standard course price.

Discuss the project with Nigel before booking so that any additional materials and costs can be identified and agreed in advance. You are also welcome to bring your own tools or materials when they are relevant to the work.

Lunch

Lunch is at 12:30 and is not provided, so please bring provisions. Details of local amenities and accommodation are included in the joining pack once the course is booked. Tea and coffee are available throughout the day, including freshly brewed coffee.

All face-to-face courses take place at the Armitage Leather workshop. The course runs from 9 am to 4 pm, with a break for lunch at 12:30. Contact details and directions are available on the Contact page.
