Leather Box Making Course
Develop the precision required for traditional leather box making
Traditional leather box making requires a high degree of precision. Rather than joining two or three flexible pieces, you may be bringing together as many as ten separate components, each of which affects the alignment and fit of the others.
During this one-to-one course, you will learn how to calculate internal and external measurements accurately and turn them into reliable working templates. This is particularly important when the box is intended for a specific purpose or must meet a particular finished size.
The day concentrates on the planning and construction sequence, including accurate mitres, component alignment, box stitching and finishing. You will leave with a clear understanding of the method and the skills needed to continue developing independently.
A completed box cannot be made in one day. A full box with a fitted lid typically requires three days, so the course focuses on precision and correct technique rather than producing a hurried finished object.
Course Content
During the course, you will work through the design and construction sequence for a traditional leather box. The skills covered include:
- Design and accurate template making
- Internal and external measurement
- Stitch marking and the correct placement of reverse irons
- Skiving clean, accurate mitres
- Awl use and box stitching
- Component alignment and assembly
- Edge dressing and finishing
These techniques are taught as a connected process so that you understand how each component affects the next, why errors accumulate and where to make corrections before assembly.
Who is this course for?
This is an advanced course for leatherworkers who can already measure and cut accurately and have a practical command of saddle stitching, skiving and awl use. These skills will be used throughout the day and are not taught from the beginning.
The course is suited to experienced makers who are ready to work to fine tolerances and want to extend their skills into structured, multi-component box construction.
What is included?
All materials, tools and sundries needed during the day are provided. There are no additional costs or fees.
Lunch
Lunch is at 12:30 and is not provided, so please bring provisions. Details of local amenities and accommodation are included in the joining pack once the course is booked. Tea and coffee are available throughout the day, including freshly brewed coffee.
All face-to-face courses take place at the Armitage Leather workshop. The course runs from 9 am to 4 pm, with a break for lunch at 12:30. Contact details and directions are available on the Contact page.
Cancellation Policy
If you need to cancel, please let me know as soon as possible.
Cancellations made 14 days or more before the course date are eligible for a full refund.
Cancellations made less than 14 days before the course date are not eligible for a refund, although an alternative date may be offered.
Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the course start time are not eligible for a refund. A further date may be offered at 50% of the normal course price.
All alternative dates are offered at the discretion of Armitage Leather.
If you would like to attend as a couple, trio or group of friends, you can add up to two additional places when booking. The second and third places are each reduced by 50%. Select the number of additional attendees at checkout.
